Diversity in Clinical Trials

Randomised trials are important, but they often don’t involve some of the people who have most to gain from better treatment. This webinar, part of the International PPI Network series, discussed the NIHR INCLUDE Ethnicity Framework, a tool to help trial teams think more carefully about the ethnic groups their trial needs, and how the trial may need to change to enable them to take part. In addition to improving trials, this should also help those summarising trial evidence (e.g. systematic reviewers) to be able to better assess the applicability of trial evidence for all groups in society, not just some. This webinar also discussed actions that Pfizer has taken to help achieve equitable representation in clinical trials. The webinar was delivered in November 2023 and below you will find the videos from the webinar, together with accompanying slides to download.

Professor of Health Services Research

Shaun Treweek

Shaun is a health services researcher interested in efficient trial design, particularly around inclusive recruitment and retention and the effective presentation of research evidence. He led the development of the NIHR INCLUDE Ethnicity Framework, a tool to help trialists design inclusive trials and PRECIS-2, a tool to match trial design decisions to what the users of the results need.

He leads an initiative called Trial Forge (http://www.trialforge.org) that aims to be more systematic about how we identify, generate and use research evidence in making trial design, conduct, analysis and reporting decisions. In 2019 Trial Forge won the international Cochrane-REWARD Prize for outstanding work in reducing waste in research. Finally, Shaun is an Editor-in-Chief of the journal Trials

Makeida Stubbs

Makeida’s career with Pfizer spans over 20 years. Her extensive drug development experience ranges from serving as a Toxicology Research Scientist in Preclinical Drug Safety Research & Development, to a Public Health Professional and passionate advocate for diversity, inclusion, and equitable representation in clinical trials. In her current role as a Clinical Trial Diversity Lead for Internal Medicine, Anti-Infective, and Inflammation & Immunology therapeutic areas, Makeida ensures that diversity strategies are developed and incorporated into study-level planning, and that participant diversity is monitored throughout the course of the trial. She holds a BS in Animal Science, MS in Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, and a Master's in Public Health.
